Where to Find Wildflowers, Creekside Trails, and One Unforgettable Family Adventure
Summer in the Vail Valley has a rhythm all its own. Mornings are cool, afternoons stretch long, and the mountains trade ski tracks for wildflowers and green meadows. It’s the season for patio lunches, farmers markets, and some of the best hiking in Colorado.
Whether you’re looking for an easy walk with the kids, a half-day adventure, or a trail that earns your après cocktail, the Vail area offers something for every pace. These are a few of the Vail Butler team’s favorite hikes in Vail and Minturn, along with one family experience that deserves a spot on every summer itinerary. Spoiler: It’s a hike with a llama!

When to Hike in Vail
Late June through early September is prime hiking season in Vail. July is especially beautiful, with peak wildflower season bringing color to many of the valley’s trails.
Even in summer, mountain weather changes quickly. We recommend heading out early, carrying plenty of water, and packing an extra layer. Visitors arriving from lower elevations should ease into longer hikes and give themselves a day or two to adjust to the altitude.

Easy Hike: Cross Creek Trail
Location: Minturn
Recommended Distance: 4 miles round trip is our recommended route, although the full trail is 27+ miles
When Vail locals want to avoid crowds, Cross Creek is often the answer.
For a gentler outing, Melinda recommends Cross Creek in Minturn. It is shaded, peaceful, and close to water, with fewer crowds than some of the more well-known Vail trails. A shorter out-and-back of around 4 miles makes it a lovely choice for families, dog owners, or anyone who wants to enjoy the scenery without committing to a big climb.
Melinda’s tip: Start early, then reward yourself with lunch in Minturn afterward. Pair the hike with a stop at Minturn Market on Saturdays during the summer.

Moderate Hike: Shrine Ridge Trail
Location: Vail Pass
Recommended Distance: 4.6 miles round trip
If someone asks where to see wildflowers near Vail, Shrine Ridge Trail is usually our first recommendation.
The views open quickly, and by mid-summer, the meadows are filled with lupine, paintbrush, and columbine. Because much of the scenery arrives early in the hike, Shrine Pass delivers a big payoff without requiring a full day on the trail.
Bring your camera. This area is one of the most photographed summer landscapes in the Vail Valley.
Tip: This trail offers minimal shade. Start early to avoid hiking in the midday heat and sun.
Challenging Hikes: Big Horn Creek and Cougar Ridge
Locations: Vail and Minturn
For guests who enjoy longer miles and steeper terrain, Christiane suggests you try Big Horn Creek Trail and Cougar Ridge to experience a more rugged side of the valley.
Big Horn Creek climbs steadily through aspen groves and alongside flowing water before revealing expansive mountain views. Cougar Ridge rewards the effort with quiet forests and fewer people than many of the better-known trails around Vail.
Christiane recommends both routes for experienced hikers looking to spend more time in the mountains and less time around the crowds.

A Family Favorite: Guided Llama Hikes
Not every adventure has to involve chasing elevation.
One of our favorite experiences for families visiting Vail is a guided hike with a llama. Equal parts outdoor adventure and memory-maker, these outings combine scenic trails with friendly pack llamas and a relaxed pace that works well for multiple generations.
Guests walk through beautiful alpine terrain alongside calm, friendly llamas, with wildflowers, open views, and crisp mountain air setting the scene. A knowledgeable local guide leads the way, adding thoughtful stories and insight that help bring the surrounding wilderness to life. Children love the novelty of walking with the llamas, while adults appreciate the relaxed pace, the scenery, and the sense that the entire outing has been thoughtfully arranged.
The experience is especially wonderful because it feels both polished and playful. With a beautifully prepared lunch enjoyed in the Rockies and every detail handled with ease, a llama hike becomes the kind of effortless, one-of-a-kind family outing that guests remember long after their time in Vail. It is ideal for multi-generational groups, first-time visitors, or anyone who wants a mountain adventure that feels distinctive without being overly strenuous.
It’s a unique experience that guests talk about long after their vacation ends.
