Birds of Prey Ski Race Returns to Beaver Creek

An Important and Prestigious Race

Birds of Prey returns to Beaver Creek Mountain for this year December 2-4, 2022.

Birds of Prey isn’t your average ski race. It’s one of many FIS Alpine Ski World Cup races that takes place each year throughout the world. What’s the big deal about a World Cup race? During each race, the globe’s top ski athletes compete for the top spot. Athletes who place in the top 30 spots earn qualifying points, which can eventually translate to a bid to the Winter Olympics.

Essentially, World Cup races don’t just offer a chance to compete in incredible races with fellow athletes. During Olympic qualifying years, World Cup races are one way to ensure a space on the Olympic roster.

A Difficult Course

Birds of Prey is a course so difficult that it is recognized as one of the top most challenging courses on the World Cup alpine circuit, and with good reason. With a vertical height of 2,470 feet of trail marked with steep pitches and dangerous speed, Birds of Prey is not for the faint of heart. Jumps throughout the course are aptly named after various birds of prey like Red Tail, Peregrine, Harrier, and Golden Eagle.

Ski racers have been battling for the top spot in this race since 1997. Two impressive events are included: Super G and Downhill. Curious spectators visit from around the world to cheer athletes on from the sidelines. Both the Super G and Downhill races are fast. Blink, and you may miss a run.

Events and Activities

Although the races are the main event, the town of Beaver Creek Village buzzes with a variety of activities and events throughout the weekend. It hosts live music, beer tastings, ski films, and parties open for all visitors to attend. Check out the full schedule here.

This is one popular weekend to visit the Vail Valley and it serves as the unofficial kickoff to the winter season each year. For that reason, we recommend reserving a vacation home well in advance, especially for those who want to be close to all the festivities.
